Double Roti is the latest burger place to open its doors to Chennaites. During the soft launch phase they had this offer running where you can pay how much ever you are willing to after eating. That offer enticed to step in and check out the place. After a hard day’s work we wanted to raid the place. So I was joined by 3 of my cousins to whom I did not disclose it is a burger joint initially. After seeing the menu card they were drooling and eager to attack the goodness that was packed between the buns!
Once upon a time I used to subsist on non-veg food, but converted to a veggie about 8 years back. I have tasted some lip smacking hamburgers in the US. But after I turned veggie, burger has not been my preferred choice as veg burgers do not offer much to satiate my appetite.
Two of us had reached early and we placed initial orders of Sour Cream and Salsa Fries, and after much deliberation my cousin ordered Illegal burger (beef) as suggested by Sam who was waiting our table. Very few tables were occupied and the few customers were scattered across the room. I was soaking in the atmosphere, reading the funny quotes, taking pics, all the while confabbing with Sam. The menu grabbed our attention instantly had some funky names such as Pocket Mein Rocket, Soya Soya Chand etc. By the time our fist order arrived the remaining two cousins appeared. After few light banters were exchanged we proceeded to order more. We ordered Oreo milkshake, Strawberry milkshake and Peach Ice Tea. The portions were huge and each was served in a different shaped container.
After consulting with Sam, I chose to go with Aubergine and Feta melt. My other two cousins opted for Area 69 (beef) double and The Mexican Wave (chicken). We also ordered Caramelized Onion and Grill Sausage Fries, Chicken Came First Salad. By this time the place started to fill up and I was occasionally glancing up to see how they were managing with few staff. He kept coming to our table to check if everything was alright. Even with the crowd it was quite easy to get their attention. Since one of my cousins was on a sling, he asked for a knife. Sam insisted that the burger must be had with hands to appreciate the taste. My cousin promptly replied he might need extra mouth to push the monstrous burger inside.
When the Area 69 appeared it looked small, so decided to check. Turned out that there was only one patty. They promptly came back with the double patty which we ordered. The cousins were devouring on the juicy burgers. Not to be left behind I was telling how great the veg burger tasted. Contrary to my well founded belief, here is a veg burger sitting in front of my eyes majestically asking me to feel every bite and immerse in the experience. I was licking the olive oil drizzled on the patty completely oblivious to the surroundings. The basil added a completely new dimension to the burger. After gorging on the Illegal burger my cousin went for Char Grilled Pork Teriyaki burger. While I ordered a Herb Chilli Mushroom and Potato burger. Even though I asked for a single, they served me a double. This felt quite pedestrian after tasting the Aubergine. Moreover I was quite full and could not complete it.
Unfortunately since this was the soft launch days, desserts were not available. Initially we decided to pay only Rs 100 per head. Funnily after feasting so much, we felt it would not be a justice to the scrumptious food. Hence, ended up paying Rs 250/- per head. This would be around 50% of the actual cost. We left the place completely satisfied and more determined to invade the place again soon.
